Carnatic music is a system of music commonly associated with the southern part of the Indian subcontinent. It is one of two main subgenres of Indian classical music that evolved from ancient Hindu traditions, characterized by a focus on vocal music, melodic improvisation (raga), and rhythmic cycles (tala).

Origin: Southern India (Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Telangana).

Era: Ancient roots, codified in the 13th-16th centuries, formalized in the 18th century.
