歌仔戲
Gezai Xi (歌仔戲), or Taiwanese Opera, is a vibrant traditional theatrical form from Taiwan featuring sung and spoken narratives in Taiwanese Hokkien. It blends music, drama, and dance to depict tales of love, morality, history, and folklore with expressive vocals and rhythmic percussion.
Origin: Taiwan; developed from Fujianese folk songs and performance traditions brought by Hokkien immigrants, popularized in Tainan and Kaohsiung.
Era: Early 20th century (1920s) to present; evolved from Minnan folk tunes in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period.
