北管
Beiguan (北管), or Northern Pipe music, is a traditional Taiwanese ensemble genre rooted in Fujian folk traditions. It features bold suona (shawm) melodies over intricate percussion rhythms, often accompanying puppet theater (Budaixi), rituals, weddings, and festivals. Pentatonic scales, call-and-response patterns, and dynamic contrasts define its ceremonial energy.
Origin: Taiwan, imported from Fujian Province, China by Hoklo immigrants. Evolved in ritual, theater, and folk contexts.
