Bebop

Bebop is a revolutionary subgenre of jazz that emerged in the early 1940s in the United States. It shifted jazz from dance-oriented swing to a complex, listening-oriented art form characterized by rapid tempos, virtuosic improvisation, intricate harmonic substitutions, and angular melodic lines performed by small ensembles.

Origin: United States, primarily Harlem, New York City; pioneered by African American musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, and Max Roach as a reaction to commercial swing.

Era: 1940s–1960s
