Marinera

Marinera is a traditional Peruvian partner dance and music genre originating from the northern coast. It features elegant zapateo footwork, handkerchief flourishes, and emotive call-and-response vocals in a distinct 6/8 rhythm, fusing Spanish bolero, African percussion, and indigenous Quechua elements.

Origin: Northern coastal Peru, especially Trujillo; spread nationwide with Spanish, African, and Quechua influences.

Era: Late 19th century to present; evolved from colonial zamacueca into regional styles like Marinera Norteña, Limeña, and Serrana.
